| SEED OUTLOOK
Seed harvests for `93 were average, generally speaking. Prices will, overall, be similar to last year. Big bluestem is in abundant supply, price is down slightly. Indiangrass will be short this year, price is up over last year. There should be enough for most of the year. The availability will probably be critical late next spring. Varietal little bluestem will be hard to come by but there are sufficient supplies of native little blue. Sideoats grama is in average supply. Switchgrass is in reasonable supply. Blackwell is about $2.00 a PLS pound while Cave-in-Rock is twice that.
Cave-in-Rock is in short supply. I recommend ordering switchgrass early. When levee revegetation begins there will be an increased demand for seed. Supplies will be limited later in the year and prices will most likely go up.
Do you have a big need for switchgrass next year? Buy it now and store it. Year old switch generally establishes better anyway. Overall, if purchasing a mix, the mix prices will be similar to last year.
With a few exceptions wildflower seed availability is generally the same as last year. For the second year in a row there has been essentially no Butterfly Milkweed seed production, making it unavailable. If you happen to find small quantities be prepared to pay. Pale Purple Coneflower may be in short supply. The industry is waiting on one grower to clean his harvest. Apparently, no one else has any great quantity. Pitcher's Sage and Leadplant are also limited. All others look good.
